A proof of edition is printed on the back of the lithograph, guaranteeing its authenticity. The dark, muted colours create an ominous feeling in the viewer, and the consequent bafflement at the unusual pose and placement of clothe adds to this discomfort. Rene Magritte's mother's body was found in a river and it is said that her face was wrapped up in the fabric of her skirt. Its unusual image is more subtle, showing that the simple act of taking away the view of a person's face in an image can create a sense of unease.

It is poignant that the understanding of these paintings is difficult to discern. His matter-of-fact style deliberately eschewed the assumption that these images were simply the expression of personal fantasy or private neurosis. She repeatedly tried to commit suicide and eventually succeeded.

While Magritte acheived fame for a number of his paintings, the series of paintings which fascinate me are The Lovers, or Les Amants. This is one of a small group of pictures painted by Magritte in Paris in 1927-28, in which the identity of the figures is mysteriously shrouded in white cloth.

He was talented in creating firm shapes that stood out strongly in the mind of the viewer, which added to the sense of confusion when he made the clear images so out of place from their surroundings which were often simple backgrounds of rooms, plain buildings, or uncomplicated natural scenes. It has also been suggested by some that his fascination with this style came from the interest many of his contemporaries had in the novel and film character Fantômas, who wore fabric draped over his face to disguise his identity. Each painting depicts a couple, the title implies they are in love, … Artists often revisit a familiar theme like this, but it is notable that they were both painted around the same time (1928), and both are named the same thing. Magritte painted these in the summer of 1928. As Magritte was not fond of explaining himself, we cannot know whether these two paintings were supposed to be part of a set, or whether he was only temporarily interested in certain motifs. In this unsettling image—the first in a series of four variations of Les Amants that Magritte painted in 1928—the artist invokes the cinematic cliché of a close–up kiss but subverts our voyeuristic pleasure by shrouding the faces in cloth. But through the simple device of the shrouds that cover the lovers' heads, tug back against their faces and curl like ropes across their shoulders, the spontaneous intimacy of this 'holiday snapshot' becomes a spectre of alienation, suffocation, even death. It is this effect that Magritte intended to create with his work as a whole with his talent as a surrealist.

In 1912, when Magritte was only thirteen years of age, his mother was found drowned in the river Sambre; when her body was recovered from the river, her nightdress was supposedly wrapped around her head. This is helped along by the start contrast of the pale fabric and the darker background, possibly supposed to be the sky or another wall. Like many of his Surrealist associates, Magritte was fascinated by 'Fantômas', the shadowy hero of the thriller series which first appeared in novel form in 1913, and shortly after in films made by Louis Feuillade.

According to Magritte, there is no symbolism or deeper meaning in the picture other than what is seen at plain sight. Its unusual image is more subtle, showing that the simple act of taking away the view of a person's face in an image can create a sense of unease.

Around the time that Magritte painted this version of 'Les Amants', he painted another with the same title and what appears to be the same scene, moved slightly. Surrealism thrives on the idea of destroying the common understanding of 'normal', and to over-explain a piece would be to destroy that possibility.
